Mangere Mountain- 13th March 2017
On Monday, Rooms 1 and 7 went to Mangere Mountain Education Centre to start our new topic 'Myths & Legends'. We learnt about legends associated with Mangere Mountain and the Auckland region. We got to do all this while walking up Mangere mountain too. In the afternoon, Stardome Observatory came to the centre to show us how to look at the stars using a smart device and gave us a few tips on how to find Matariki.
Thank you so much to Mangere Mountain Education Centre, Stardome Observatory and our parent helpers Sheeandra (Jaeda's Mum) and Sega (Shaquile's Dad).

Finding out the area of our Netball Court
This term in Numeracy our focus has been around Measurement. For the past week we have been learning about area. First we made a sqaure metre using cardboard, cellotape and a metre ruler. This helped us to see what a square metre looked like. We then had the task of finding the area of our Netball Court. So measured the length and width using the square metre we had constructed, then we worked out that the length multiplied by the width would give us the area of the court. Area is the inside of a shape.
Find below some photos of our process
We did this as a class as many groups had different measurements of the court. We decided to measure the length and width of the court again to ensure we were doing it accurately. We concluded that the length of the court was 23m (nearest metre) and the width was 13m (nearest metre).
We went 23 X 10 (made a tidy number, so that we could work it out)= 230
23 X 3 (the left over from the 13)= 69
Added the totals together: 230 + 69= 299m2
We even replicated what the court would look like if we were to measure it using the square metre. Each cube in the picture represents 1m2. There is 23 cubes for the length and 13 cubes for the width. We counted them all and there was a total of 299 cubes.

Kiwi Can Week 4
This week in Kiwi Can we are learning how to follow instructions.
This is a video of our class completing the warm up activity- We had to focus really hard on the instructions because Matua Joseph (Kiwi Can Leader) was confusing us by doing the opposite moves.
This is a video of our class working in groups to follow instructions from a leader. We had to make sure we listened to the instructions from the Kiwi Can Leader carefully in order to relay the instructions to our group in the correct order.
